Brian Stann scratched from UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” with foot injury

Missing from the official announcement just yesterday about additional details for UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” was former WEClight heavyweight champion Brian Stann.

That’s because the “All American” was penciled in to fight the man whotook his title, Steve Cantwell, on the main card at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., on Wednesday, December 10.

The 205-pound match up was supposed to be the first casualty of the promotion’s recent division downsizing (Zuffa is the parent company of the UFC and WEC), as well as a fantastic opportunity for Stann — a former Marine and decorated Iraq war veteran — to strut his stuff in front of his supportive peers.

However, Stann sustained a foot injury while training, according to sources, and will be unable to compete at the military-inspired event. It is more than likely a disappointing blow for the Silver Star winner.

In addition to fighting in front of the troops, Stann was also out to settle a score with Cantwell — the pair have split their two previous bouts and a third would have provided a necessary conclusion to the rivalry.

It will have to wait. In the meantime, we’re told the promotion is currently on the hunt to find an opponent for Cantwell. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com to see if that happens in the near future.

Remember that the fantastic welterweight match up between Josh Koscheck and Yoshiyuki Yoshida will headline the three-hour Spike TV special, which will begin to air at 8 p.m. ET.

Keep in mind that the special event is designed to raise funds for the construction of The National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a treatment center for Armed Forces personnel who have experienced traumatic brain injuries.

Therefore, donations are accepted and encouraged.
