Brian Stann vs Steve Cantwell 3 set for UFC Fight for the Troops

WEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell (6-1) and former division kingpin Brian Stann (6-1) will duke it out in a rubbermatch inside the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., on December 10.

The 205-pound match up is the first casualty of the promotion’s division downsizing, which was just made official today. For more on that click here.

Stann is a former Marine who certainly fits the bill for the the three-hour Spike TV special that is designed to honor United States military personnel. “All American” — who earned a Silver Star for valor while serving his country in Iraq — defeated Doug Marshall earlier this year to capture the title.

However, his reign atop the weight class was short lived thanks to Cantwell just five months later and a second round technical knockout. It was a fight in which Stann tired early and was unable to land a Hail Mary punch to turn the tables.

Cantwell is riding a three-fight win streak after suffering the first loss of his career to Stann back in early 2007. He stopped all three opponents. In fact, Cantwell has never been the distance in seven professional mixed martial arts bouts.

Of course, the WEC light heavyweight title will not be on the line … it will more than likely be dissolved. It should be real interesting to see how these two perform not only against one another, but how they stack up against the rest of the fighters in perhaps the UFCs most talent-rich division.
