Submission of the Year

Cole Miller vs. Jorge Gurgel (UFC 86)
This submission was not the most spectacular we’ve ever seen, but this was applied at the end of the 3rd round against an excellent Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Both guys are slicker than oiled pigs and Miller was on the verge of losing his 2nd straight fight in the Octagon. Miller was being dominated for the entire three rounds and was on his way to losing again after a previous knockout loss to Jeremy Stephens.
He was able to use his length over the shorter and smaller Gurgel with :12 seconds remaining in the fight to slap on the Triangle Choke for the victory and to keep his contract alive in the UFC. Cole Miller is not a high profile fighter, but he came up big when his career needed it the most against a very unlikely opponent. Great submission under tough circumstances and at the right time…he gets our Sub of the Year.

UFC 86 drug test results come back clean

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued the results of the drug tests performed prior to UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on July 5, revealing that all eight fighters who were screened for banned substances tested negative.

Forrest Griffin, Quinton Jackson, Melvin Guillard, Justin Buchholtz, Cole Miller, Gabriel Gonzaga, Joe Stevenson and Patrick Cote were all among the fighters who were randomly selected to provide samples before their fights.

The tests are designed to deter fighters from ingesting performance enhancing drugs such as steroids and stimulants, as well drugs of abuse like marijuana, heroin, etc.

NSAC has adopted a new year-round drug-testing policy, which is perhaps the strictest of its kind in the sport.

In fact, the NSAC also tested Griffin and Jackson weeks out from the pay-per-view (PPV) event to ensure that fighters don’t “cycle” off of substances prior to their tests.

The tests were random — there was no other reason the fighters mentioned above were singled out.

However, Guillard has tested positive for cocaine in the past and Keith Kizer, NSAC executive director, has mentioned that previous failed tests will be a factor (among others) when it comes to deciding if a fighter should or should not be tested.

UFC 86 medical suspensions and injuries from NSAC

ufc 86 medical suspensions
Lacerations were the name of the game at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, this past weekend.

Or as Joe Rogan so eloquently put it in the fight between Josh Koscheck and Chris Lytle … a goat’s vagina.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its medical suspensions for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that took place on Saturday, July 5, revealing that Forrest Griffin, Chris Lytle, Cole Miller and Justin Buchholz all got cut and will need to take some time off to heal.

It was also no surprise that former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will have to undergo a battery of tests on his left leg before he can return to action.

Here’s the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:

Forrest Griffin –- The new champion must clear a right upper eyelid laceration with a doctor or there is no contest until September 4.

Quinton Jackson – “Rampage” must have his left knee, tibia, fibia and thumb x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest until January 2, 2009. He will have to ride out a minimum suspension until at least August 5 and there is no contact allowed until July 27.

Josh Koscheck -– He will have to serve a minimum suspension until August 5 for undisclosed reasons.

Chris Lytle — Lytle will have to have his right eye lacerations cleared by a doctor or there is no contest until September 4.

Marcus Aurelio –- “Maximus” must have a possible left thumb ligament injury cleared by orthopedic doctor or he will be unable to compete until January 2, 2009. His minimum suspension (no contest) will last until August 5 and contact is prohibited until July 27.

Justin McCully –- “The Insane One” must have his left shoulder cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest until January 2, 2009.

Cole Miller -– He must have facial lacerations cleared by a doctor or there will be no contest allowed until September 4.

Jorge Gurgel –- He must have his right tibia, fibia and elbow x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest allowed until January 2, 2009.

Dennis Siver -– He is suspended until at least August 20 and there is no contest allowed until August 5.

Justin Buchholz -– He must have a scalp laceration cleared by a doctor or there will be no contest allowed until September 4.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Jorge Gurgel: ‘Im a completely different animal’

jorge gurgel

Props: Seattle Post Intelligencer

Quoteworthy:

“… my game plan is to just finish the fight. I’ve never really had a game plan before. I’d just go in there, throw hands and go crazy. This time, I’m a completely different animal, I have a game plan, I’m going to follow it and not allow this fight to go to a decision. I can’t tell you too much about it, but for the first time in my career I have a game plan and will follow it. I hope it works, I’m not sure yet.”

Jorge Gurgel details his training and preparation with Matt Hume prior to his fight against Cole Miller at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5. Gurgel has won three fights in five attempts inside the Octagon — all of those contests have gone to decisions. Prior to his arrival in the UFC he had 10 wins all via submission.
