Thales Leites open to future fight vs. Demian Maia

Traditionally, Brazilian fighters have shied away from fighting fellow countrymen when competing outside of their home country. However, in a new interview with Brazilian MMA website Tatame, rising UFC middleweight Thales Leites indicates that he’s open to the idea of fighting Demian Maia, a rising UFC middleweight in his own right. “I’d accept a fight [vs. [...]

Thales Leites welcomes fight against Demian Maia

Props: Tatame.com

Quoteworthy:

“I’d accept a fight, I’m a professional. Demian is a great fighter and has been doing a great job in UFC. It’s possible that they put this fight, because the belt is with a Brazilian guy and we’re growing, so they can put this fight to take one of the Brazilians from the tops. I believe it’d be a good fight, we almost have the same game and it’s kind of different from the American guys, who goes from striking and work on the ground n’ pound. We know each other’s game and it’d be a huge fight. Demian has been doing a good job, but I’d accept this fight.”

Thales Leites — who is on a five-fight UFC win streak (5-1 overall) — has no problems taking a fight against Demian Maia sometime down the road. Maia is on a four-fight tear of his own inside the Octagon, winning all four of his fights via submission. Locking the two Brazilians inside the cage would go a long way toward helping determine the top contender in the division. It would also be one hell of a ground war — each fighter boasts sick jiu-jitsu skills. Sooner rather than later, please, Joe Silva.

UFC Quick Quote: Demian Maia continues to lobby for Michael Bisping fight

“He’s with a great popularity, is a good guy to fight now and I think it’d be a great fight. It doesn’t mean I’d win, but he fought great guys and always made god fights, and I believe it’d be a good fight to my career. I need this, I need good fights and I believe the time has come…. He’s a stand-up guy, doesn’t like to fight on the ground, but he’s not easy. I always think the same, he’ll try to stand, avoid the ground, and I’ll try to put him down and do my Jiu-Jitsu, trying to submit.”

– Undefeated middleweight contender Demian Maia continues to talk about a possible fight against Michael Bisping with Tatame.com. The accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt called out “The Count” after he stopped Nate Quarry in less than three minutes via rear naked choke at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” over the weekend. He has also already accepted the position opposite Bisping on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) if UFC President Dana White offers it to him. The only problem is that Maia would be unable to represent the “U.S.” in the “U.S. vs. U.K.”-themed show. Unless, of course, that format, which White has called “dumb” is scrapped between now and the end of January when production on TUF 9 is set to commence.

Demian Maia: ‘Michael Bisping is a good fight for me’

Props: Newsday

Quoteworthy:

“I never have a strategy when I come into a fight. I see what happens and fight anywhere, standing, on the ground, wherever. I come to give the fans a good fight…. It’s up to Dana White and Joe Silva. There are many tough guys. Maybe Michael Bisping is a good fight for me.”

Demian Maia talks about a possible match up with Michael Bisping moments after he finished Nate Quarry via first round submission (rear naked choke) at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” last night. It was the fourth win for the Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion inside the Octagon, all of which have come by way of submission. He is clearly ready to compete against the top in the division, including “The Count;” however, Bisping is slated to serve as coach on season nine of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Therefore, he will more than likely be tied up for most of early 2009 — TUF 9 begins taping in February. Thales Leites, Nate Marquardt and the winner of the UFC 92 bout between Yushin Okami and Dean Lister are also some good possibilities. Let’s see how this situation shakes out in the coming days and months.
