Lacerations were the name of the game at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, this past weekend.
Or as Joe Rogan so eloquently put it in the fight between Josh Koscheck and Chris Lytle … a goat’s vagina.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its medical suspensions for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that took place on Saturday, July 5, revealing that Forrest Griffin, Chris Lytle, Cole Miller and Justin Buchholz all got cut and will need to take some time off to heal.
It was also no surprise that former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will have to undergo a battery of tests on his left leg before he can return to action.
Here’s the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:
Forrest Griffin –- The new champion must clear a right upper eyelid laceration with a doctor or there is no contest until September 4.
Quinton Jackson – “Rampage” must have his left knee, tibia, fibia and thumb x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest until January 2, 2009. He will have to ride out a minimum suspension until at least August 5 and there is no contact allowed until July 27.
Josh Koscheck -– He will have to serve a minimum suspension until August 5 for undisclosed reasons.
Chris Lytle — Lytle will have to have his right eye lacerations cleared by a doctor or there is no contest until September 4.
Marcus Aurelio –- “Maximus” must have a possible left thumb ligament injury cleared by orthopedic doctor or he will be unable to compete until January 2, 2009. His minimum suspension (no contest) will last until August 5 and contact is prohibited until July 27.
Justin McCully –- “The Insane One” must have his left shoulder cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest until January 2, 2009.
Cole Miller -– He must have facial lacerations cleared by a doctor or there will be no contest allowed until September 4.
Jorge Gurgel –- He must have his right tibia, fibia and elbow x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or there will be no contest allowed until January 2, 2009.
Dennis Siver -– He is suspended until at least August 20 and there is no contest allowed until August 5.
Justin Buchholz -– He must have a scalp laceration cleared by a doctor or there will be no contest allowed until September 4.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Quoteworthy:
“Right now it’s tough. You got guys like Spencer Fisher, Frankie Edgar, I can name so many. You even got Rich in there. It gets tougher and you just got to train harder, but right now I’m going to give it a shot and try to become UFC champion. But for future reference, if that doesn’t work and I don’t feel that I’m going to be a champion in the UFC then switch me over to the WEC because its about being a champion and I want to go somewhere where I can be a champion right now. I’m not going to be naive and a hypocrite but I don’t see myself beating BJ Penn right now, he’s a top guy. Anybody under him, yeah, I can go head to head with and I could give it a shot, but I’m not going to sit here and say that my skills are good enough to beat BJ Penn right now because his ground game is way off the charts. Guys like (WEC lightweight champion) Jamie Varner and (Rob) McCullough and guys like that — those guys are tailor made for me to fight. I’m gonna give it a shot and give it a run, but if I fall short again, I’ll be looking forward to moving somewhere else so I can become a champion.”
Melvin Guillard details his recent growth inside and outside the Octagon in a recent interview prior to his lightweight showdown with Dennis Siver at UFC 86: “Jackson vs Griffin” on July 5. “The Young Assassin” has back-to-back losses within the eight-sided cage and if it happens again he seems content to try his hand in another organization such as the WEC.

Ultimate Fighter 2 alumnus and oft-troubled lightweight Melvin Guillard (21-7-2) is returning to the UFC - a bit sooner than expected - to take on Germany’s Dennis Siver (11-5) at UFC 86 in Las Vegas, Nevada according to UFC.com.
“The Young Assassin” was granted a temporary release from the UFC, which he detailed in a colorful diatribe right here, after he lost to hated rival Rich Clementi via submission (rear naked choke) at UFC 79: “Nemesis” back in December 2007.
It was the second straight defeat for the Louisianna native and the first since returning from a nine-month drug suspension (cocaine) after his loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC Fight Night 9 in April 2007.
Guillard got back to his winning ways after taking a unanimous decision win over Eric Regan at Rage in the Cage last month. Apparently that victory was sufficient enough for him to rejoin the ranks of the lightweight division - a division that he may find himself near the bottom of thanks to an absolute plethora of talented fighters.
If fans and critics are going to take him seriously, he needs to make a statement against Dennis Siver. That may be easier said than done. Despite being outpointed by Gray Maynard back at Fight Night 12 and having an overall record of 1-2 in the UFC, Siver hasn’t been knocked out in sixteen fights (Guillard’s strength) and more than half of his wins have come by submission (Guillard’s weakness).
This may be Guillard’s last chance at success in the UFC. Let’s hope the time away from the Octagon has helped him get his priorities in order.
