Report: Affliction balks at signing ex-UFC heavyweight Werdum

According to a report by Franklin McNeil of ESPN.com and the Newark Star-Ledger, the camp for Fabricio Werdum approached Affliction Entertainment in an attempt to place the former PRIDE and UFC heavyweight with the organization. McNeil revealed the news during this week’s edition of MMA Live, which can be viewed on FiveOuncesOfPain.com. McNeil stated that both sides [...]

Now a free agent, Werdum has his sights set on Affliction

After initially denying published reports that he had been released from his contract with the UFC, heavyweight Fabricio Werdum acknowledged in a recent interview with the Brazilian MMA website Tatame.com that he is indeed a free agent. “When I first heard the rumors, I didn’t know anything,” Werdum is quoted as telling Tatame. “I had four [...]

Fabricio Werdum Looking To Land On His Feet In Affliction

Fabricio Werdum:

“When I first heard the rumours, I didn’t know anything. I had four more fights left with them on my contract, which ran to 2010. But they demanded to renegotiate my exiting contract by cutting my pay in half … No that wasn’t an issue but its not something that benefit’s the fighters”

“It’s a pity I would have liked to continue with the UFC but now we forge ahead…I still plan to go to the United States with my family. I’m open to negotiations with Affliction, Sengoku and Dream …I’m a free agent now”

“One of the advantages of leaving the UFC is the freedom of contract, which allows fighters to work with more than one event without any problems.

“That’s very beneficial. There are several possibilities now including fighting in multiple organizations. Affliction, Sengoku and Dream are big events, but I think the possibility of fighting for Affliction in particular will give me the best chance to fight the best in the world, Fedor, in addition to (Andrei) Arlovski, Josh Barnett and several other big names …That would be a great opportunity for me”

Kind of shameful, he guy beats Brandon Vera, Gabriel Gonzaga and went the distance with Nogueria and is asked to take a 50% pay cut.

Fabricio Werdum — who was cut after losing to Octagon newcomer Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos via first round knockout at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25 — talks about where he wants to fight in the future. The consensus top ten heavyweight fighter was surprisingly cut after his latest lost. In fact, it was such a surprise that he didn’t even know it when the news broke. He should fit in well with Affliction … its heavyweight roster is very deep and talented.

Fabricio Werdum Leaves The UFC

Following the devastating knockout loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 90, UFC heavyweight top contender Fabricio Werdum has apparently not come to terms on a new contract and has left the UFC, according to MMAWeekly.

Sources indicate that Werdum was expecting a title shot, but the KO derailed any chance of that happening anytime soon. The Chute Box fighter will likely try to negotiate a spot in the US based Affliction promotion or possibly DREAM or Sengoku in Japan.

Fabricio Werdum out of UFC

Content with its current stable of heavyweight fighters, which includes a mix of veterans and up-and-comers, the UFC apparently no longer required the services of a widely regarded top 10 competitor.

Fabricio Werdum was unable to come to terms with UFC officials on a new contract after his surprising 81-second knockout loss to Octagon newcomer Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” on October 15, forcing the Brazilian and the promotion to go their separate ways, according to MMAWeekly.com.

“Vai Cavalo” perhaps spoke prematurely (or something was lost in translation) when he declared that he had inked a five-fight contract extension back in July that included a guaranteed title shot with a win over “Cigano.”

It appears that the offer may have been merely discussed and/or was contingent on a win in the “Windy City.” He also could have ruffled some feathers when he voiced his displeasure about being excluded from the mini heavyweight tournament put together to declare an undisputed division champion.

Regardless, Werdum leaves the promotion with an even record (2-2), scoring big wins over Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga and perhaps bigger losses to Andrei Arlovski and Dos Santos.

He remains a very capable and dangerous fighter who, according to the report, is already courting offers to compete in “The Land of the Rising Sun.” That’s because prior to his UFC run, the Brazilian was a very popular and successful fighter in Pride FC.

In fact, Werdum battled current UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera at Critical Countdown Absolute back in July of 2006 for the chance to advance to the semifinals of the PRIDE 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix. “Minotauro” bested Werdum by unanimous decision in what was one of many outstanding fights that night.

While his chances for a rematch anytime soon are now more than likely dashed, rest assured that we will see the Chute Boxe-trained fighter back in action sooner rather than later.

UFC Quick Quote: Fabricio Werdum ’surprised’ by knockout loss to Dos Santos at UFC 90

“… I was ready and focused, but everything happened so fast, the punch came fast and strongly. I punched him and down my head and he punched me in the same time. I twisted my knee when I fell down and opened a cut in my nose, but everything is all right. I couldn’t even feel the fight, but it’s ok, in fighting you only have two options: win or lose. Now it’s time to think in my next fight…. I’ve never been knocked out or submitted in my whole life. We always have a first time, and it was my first KO. Cigano deserved that, I have to congratulate him, because he surprised me … it wasn’t to0 much confidence. I was with a great Muay Thai, ground game, but it all happened so fast. He deserved that, he said he respected me before the fight and I respected him and still do, confidence is a normal thing.”

– Fabricio Werdum — who was widely considered a top 10 heavyweight — reflects on his 81-second knockout loss to Octagon newcomer Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” via Tatame.com. With a win Werdum would have likely bolstered his argument that he belongs in the four-man mini heavyweight tournament to declare an undisputed division champion. Now it’s back to the drawing board for the Brazilian, who intends to temporarily move to the Untied States to train in the near future. As for “Cigano,” he joins Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez among the short list of fresh division talent with huge upside.
