EliteXC consultant Gary Shaw adds some more fuel to the EliteXC fight fixing fire, contradicting EliteXC’s Head Of Operations Jeremy Lappan and his own son Jared “$kala” Shaw in a recent interview with the LA Times.

You’re talking about a fan-friendly fight, not about protecting Kimbo.”
Shaw said he has urged MMA fighters in the past to maximize the action, to avoid an abundance of yawn-inspiring wrestling.
“Do I think that’s unethical? No,” Shaw said. “Because in MMA, you get bonus money for a knockout. I don’t see it as unethical . . . asking him to be TV and fan friendly.”

“I think they’re in a very tough area. Golden Boy is doing a very good job in boxing. Oscar De La Hoya knows boxing. There’s nobody there that knows MMA. I think Affliction or Oscar, if they’re going to team up, still needs an MMA promoter. Because at the end of the day, it’s the promoter that starts the ball rolling, and starts everybody talking. You know, like me and Dana. I don’t think it’s going to work out. They’re talking about Affliction doing all the boxing gear and everything else. When I looked around the room while they were doing the press conference, there wasn’t one person wearing anything of a shirt, hat or pants that had anything to do with boxing. You go to an MMA event, it’s a lifestyle, everybody is in MMA clothing. I think it’s going to be a lesson to both. I think they’re in for some surprises.”
– Former Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw shares his thoughts with Steve Cofield on the recent partnership between Affliction MMA and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions during a recent radio interview. Obviously Shaw doesn’t think boxing and mixed martial arts can be marketed or promoted the same way as evidenced by his comments about boxing apparel vs. MMA apparel. He goes on to talk more about why he doesn’t think events featuring both boxing and MMA would work out, making actually some solid points. If anybody were to know about the difference in promoting boxing vs. MMA it would be Shaw. He has been a part of both sports at the highest level. Maybe he knows what he’s talking about. Or maybe he’s just bitter about his lack of success in mixed martial arts and doesn’t want to see other people succeed where he did not.

EliteXC “Unfinished Business” just wasn’t the same without the colorful figure EliteXC President Gary Shaw leading the charge. In a recent filing with the Securities Exchange Committee by ProElite Inc., As of July 23rd, Gary Shaw as well as ProElite Chief Strategy Officer Doug DeLuca have officially resigned from the company and its Board of Directors.
Shaw and DeLuca will remain “Consultants” to the company. Nothing was said in the report on the future of Jared “$kala” Shaw’s future involvement in the company.
Shaw a well known boxing promoter was instrumental in promoting Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano as main stream figures in MMA as well as bringing EliteXC broadcasts to Showtime and CBS.
He has also been criticized by some fans for his choices to lead the company in a “Sleazy” direction, with stripper style dancing girls, questionable matchups and allowing “Nick Diaz” antics during live events.

Two of the original Elite XC head honchos have called it quits before the mixed martial arts promotion could celebrate its two-year anniversary.
According to a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw and former Chief Executive Officer, Doug DeLuca, have resigned from their respective posts, but will remain with the company as “consultants.”
There has been speculation swirling about the demise of Gary Shaw for some time now. In fact, after the May 31 network television debut on CBS ended with mostly bad reviews — despite impressive ratings — the rumors of the successful boxing promoter being forced out by CBS executives became public.
Those reports were denied by Elite XC officials at the time, but with Shaw’s absence from the last two Elite XC events and now this announcement, it all appears to have been true after all.
Shaw took a lot of heat for some of the things he did during his time with Elite XC. Whether it was his handling of Kimbo Slice, the trademark dancing girls and rap star entrances, rumblings of possible fixed fights, or whatever it was, Gary Shaw seemed to always be the scapegoat.
Therefore, it only seems fitting that now when Elite XC is finally looking like it might turn that corner as a legitimate mixed martial arts organization, Shaw has been shown the door … essentially making him the ultimate fall guy once again.
As stated above, Shaw will remain with the company as a consultant. If that sounds like a position created to save some face for Shaw, that’s probably accurate. However, the filing says that he’ll maintain a $250,000 a year salary as well as some other perks, including Pro Elite stock shares.
Not bad for a “consulting” gig.
DeLuca stepped down as CEO back in February, but stayed on with the company as a full-time Chief Strategy Officer and Chairman of the Board. He’s maintained that position until now. He will also be kept on as a “consultant” with Elite XC — a position that will earn him $210,000 annually.
With so much negativity surrounding Elite XC in the past — for whatever reason — it looks like the promotion is trying to clean up its image. Now that there’s no more dancing girls, rap concerts, or Gary Shaw, what’s next … Kimbo Slice fighting a legitimate opponent?

“I was waiting for one of those questions and the opportunity to set the record straight. Gary is still very involved with ProElite. Gary and our team from day one at ProElite basically took MMA at our company from ground zero to a huge network success. So, Gary’s got a lot to be proud of in the MMA world. In the process of doing it, as you can imagine, Gary being from the East Coast and we being a West Coast company, took a lot of time from Gary. He was traveling non‑stop. It took a toll on his boxing business, which is very successful and it took a toll on his family. To some degree, it took a toll on his health. We collectively made the decision that Gary was going to back off a little bit, kind of take a little bit of a relaxed role as far as being involved front and center, which is a good thing for all those three things, for his health, for his boxing business, and for his family. But Gary is still very much involved and I still talk to him almost every day. He’s still there. Gary’s interest still lies in EliteXC and ProElite, making it a top organization in the world. That’s the status with Gary…. Gary is still, like I said, majorly involved. I would say he’s more or less consulting in terms of all his promoter abilities, all his contacts and everything Gary does. So Gary is kind of behind the scenes with us, kind of shaping the direction of the company, the way it’s going, pulling the strings in terms of how we’re going to promote, what we’re going to do. Again, his involvement is very much similar to what it’s always been. The difference is, he’s not going to be front and center, doing all the time‑consuming stuff that he’s done in the past.”
– Executive Chairman of Pro Elite Inc. Douglas Deluca details the new role of Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw in a conference call yesterday to promote its second installment of “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS on July 26. There had been speculation that Shaw was on his way out altogether; however, it appears that he will remain with the promotion in a new capacity going forward. It certainly does not sound like a promotion.
