According to Sherdog, lightweight Gesias “JZ” Calvancante will be sidelined 3-4 months after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during his fight with submission specialist Shinya Aoki on April 29.

The American Top Team fighter has won the K-1 Hero’s lightweight grand prix twice and was the favorite to win the DREAM Lightweight grand prix.

“I kept doing the same game…I didn’t change. The emotion took control, so I couldn’t change in the fight. I wasn’t that smart.”

“When I got to the airport, they came behind us and asked…It [the next fight] was really close timing and the knee injury I’d had for a long time.”

Making an appearance on the Savage Dog Radio Show at Sherdog today, JZ Calvancante claimed that during a knee scope he was diagnosed with a torn ACL and will have corrective surgery on it next week. The injury will require up to four months of rehab and will keep JZ out of the ring [...]

On the Savage Dog Show today, Greg Savage is reporting that he received a text message from American Top Team, informing them that Shinya Aoki will not be able to continue in the lightweight grand prix and will be replaced by JZ Calvancante at DREAM 3 on May 11th.

In a recent interview with Shinya Aoki, the freak submission artist stated that he will not be fighting at DREAM 3 if he wins his fight over Gesias “JZ” Calvancante on April 29 at DREAM 2.

- Are you thinking about fighting on May 11 in DREAM 3?
I win on Apr 29, but not fight on May 11. That’s their business and not me. I’m not well-considered person to agree with fighting on May 11. I’m not thinking about a fight after Apr 29. I may fight if I had an easy fight on Apr 29.
- Don’t you want a belt?
Not interested in. My next fight has more meaning than a belt.

The fighters faced each other at DREAM 1, but the fight was ruled a “No Contest” after JZ hit Aoki with an illegal elbow to the shoulder blade, rendering him unable to continue.

The DREAM promotion scheduled the rematch at DREAM 2 on April 29, but the winner would have to continue in the lightweight Grand Prix two weeks later at DREAM 3.

The Official DREAM website has released the lineup for the first round of the middleweight grade prix at DREAM 2. Among the middleweights announced, is the surprise rematch of lightweights Gesias “JZ” Calvancante and Shinya Aoki. JZ and Aoki fought at DREAM 1, which ended in a No Contest after JZ illegally elbowed Aoki on the upper back/sholder blade.

DREAM 2 takes place on April 29 just two weeks before the winner would have to fight Katsuhiko Nagata in the second round of the lightweight grand prix on May 11.
