Roger Huerta was recently in Toronto, Canada, putting on a seminar at Victory Fight Club.

“El Matador,” of course, is fresh off his first loss inside the Octagon against Kenny Florian last month at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” — a tough unanimous decision defeat that put his immediate title shot hopes on temporary hold.

Glenn Dextras of MMACanada.net recently caught up with Huerta to discuss the effects of his first loss in the UFC, the “greasing” accusations from Florian after the fight, how he contributes his time outside of the world of MMA and much more.

I kept thinking it was a bad dream and after three days the loss really hit me hard, so hard that I had to go back to Rio Grande Valley to be around family and friends…. Fighters are human beings and people don’t realize that fights between close people cause emotional problems. I always wear my heart on my sleeve, that’s who I am. I am an emotional person and although I fight with emotion I was mentally unfocused for the fight…. Kenny was very professional, he fought on a points system and he did that really well. He wanted to win that way and he did it well…. I would like to go back to the way I used to train, with the people I used to train with. Those guys were like brothers to me, not just trainers.”

Roger Huerta reflects on his most recent — and only — professional loss Kenny Florian at UFC 87: “Breaking Point” in front of his adopted hometown fans in Minneapolis, Minn., last month. “El Matador” lost on all three judges scorecards and reveals that if he could do it all over again he would “possibly prepare differently” and he would “fight differently.” Florian earned number one contender status with the win; however, opted to keep busy and fight Joe Stevenson at UFC 91: “Lesnar vs. Couture” on November 15 rather than wait until 2009 to challenge BJ Penn. Huerta could be a long way away from a rematch unless Florian is unsuccessful against “Daddy,” otherwise his schedule would appear to be booked for at least the next six or seven months.

To be honest he was really slippery and I don’t mean that like technically-wise, he was really slippery. I don’t know, I don’t want to speculate and say that something was used or whatever but he was just hard to hang on to and that was from all the positions. Even when I had him in like a headlock or a guillotine everything was just really slippery. When I get the position, when I get mount, when I get back-mount, I’ve fought and I’ve wrestled some of the best guys on the ground from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling to MMA and when I get those positions you’re not getting out and Roger was able to get out. It was pretty slippery so I was a little surprised. Just the first time I was mounted on him and he gave his back I was a little suspicious, I knew something was up. Who knows, all I know is I’m good at keeping those positions and I know the difference between sweat and something else and it felt like something else but who knows. (Jokingly) Maybe it’s Albolene left over from the day before from the weight cut!

“There was no way I was going to go out like that. As long as I had breath in my lungs I was gonna fight and try to win. It sucks looking back at it and it totally changed my frame of mind and what I was thinking throughout the fight [after getting caught in the first round]. I look back at that moment a lot like ‘what if I hadn’t thrown that stupid kick and not taken that punch?’ I’ll have to get back there and try it again…. I’ve got a lot of support right now. People were impressed with my abilities and the fact I stayed in there even though I was hurt. I turned a lot of heads and got a lot of new fans from this fight.”
