Inspiration From Barbara Guerra

Last week, I received an email with a link to Barbara Guerra’s video below.  It was suggested by a reader as a possible blog entry for the site (sorry, but the video cannot be embedded):

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_0d8FDwdbpY

As soon as I opened the video, I knew it had a place within the Inspirational category here.  All that was needed was some corresponding text to go along with the entry.  I was busy last week however adjusting to our baby girl, so the Guerra entry was put on hold…

I had almost forgotten about the video until reading an email this morning.  I received an email from an 18 year old man who was complaining about his height.  In his words, he is only 5′9″ and is desperate to be at least 6 feet tall.   His tone signified the end of the world.  He was really that upset (if he only knew that I wasn’t even 5′9″).  I’m lucky to tip the scales at a monumental 5′8″.

Anyways, after reading his email, the Guerra video popped into my head.  Is height really that big of a deal?  When you watch the video above, you’ll see that there are much bigger problems in the world.  It will put your height problems in perspective.  You’ll also see that strong people (body and mind) like Barbara Guerra don’t let obstacles hold them back or slow them down.

Based on the video above, she doesn’t view her situation as a handicap.  It is what it is, and she does what she does.  It is pretty obvious that she doesn’t sit around all day moping about her situation.  Instead, she gets up each day and goes for it.  She can serve as an inspiration for all.

At the end of the day, life isn’t that bad.  Put your problems in perspective and you’ll often realize that your problems will barely register on even the strongest microscope.

Natural Born Killer Carlos Condit prepares for Hiromitsu Miura WEC showdown (Part I)

condit
It’s the beginning of the second week since I returned from Afghanistan.

Training is going well — no injuries to report other than some minor stuff, but that’s normal. Even though this training camp has not been ideal because of so much traveling, I’m in great shape and feeling pretty sharp.

I’ve been waking up earlier than usual. I’m a bit of a night owl and tend to sleep fairly late in the day, but I guess I’m still on Afghan time. It’s actually been really good for training, giving me time to run in the mountains before it gets too hot.

Yesterday I went way up there! Farther than I’ve ever gone. I thoroughly enjoy running in the New Mexico foothills. Well, maybe not thoroughly … the air is very thin and the terrain is crazy steep and rocky. Actually, running up there is a bitch!

It’s an absolute blessing, however, for an endurance athlete. It’s a daunting obstacle that tests the mind and pushes the body to its breaking point. Not to mention the spiritual aspect of reaching an immense peak, literally and figuratively. Looking out over such intense natural beauty is a highlight for me during a day of grueling, tedious training.

The opponent I’ve been preparing to fight, Hiromitsu Miura, at WEC 35 on August 3 is not very well known. That being said, I believe he is a very tough and dangerous fighter. Some people may not be super excited for this match-up.

That’s because most fans probably don’t know much about Miura or they expect me to roll right over him. Hopefully they’re right, but from my perspective this is great style match-up.

He definitely likes to stand and bang and is a dangerous striker as he showed against Blas Avena. Sure, Blas isn’t known for his stand up skills, but Miura demonstrated his willingness to exchange. I’m looking too exhibit some of my striking skills and Miura is definitely a formidable target.

Until next time.

Carlos Condit (22-4) is the WEC welterweight champion and has bested several tough opponents throughout his six-year professional mixed martial arts career, including Frank Trigg, Brock Larson, Carlo Prater, Renato Verissimo, John Alessio and many others. The 24-year-old fighter out of Albuquerque, N.M., is widely considered to be among the top 170-pound fighters in the world and has not dropped a bout in more than two years. He will put his skills to the test and his title on the line next against the very dangerous Hiromitsu Miura at WEC 35 on August 3. Condit will check-in here at MMAMania.com between now and then with frequent updates from his training camp to give our readers and his fans a behind-the-scenes look as “The Natural Born Killer” prepares to claim another victim.

UFC Quick Quote: Jon Fitch earns jiu-jitsu black belt

jon fitch bjj

“I received my Black Belt today from David Camarillo. I am his first student to go from white to black. It is a great honor for me to achieve this under Dave’s teaching. I did it in 4 and a half years and have to thank everyone that contributed. My team mates and all of the Jiu-jitsu students at AKA. Thank you all so much for your time and efforts.”

– Number one welterweight contender Jon Fitch reveals that he has earned his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from Dave Camarillo — the head instructor at American Kickboxing Academy. Camarillo — also an experienced judo player — is a Ralph Gracie protege who has awarded just a handful of black belts as an instructor (six). Fitch will put his new status to the test against welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” on August 9.

UFC 86 ‘Jackson vs. Griffin’ Preview and Predictions Part 1

josh-koscheck UFC 86 Jackson vs. Griffin Preview and Predictions Part 1

Josh Koscheck vs. Chris Lytle

It was not long ago when Josh Koscheck was maligned for his boring fights and one-dimensional style. Known primarily for his “lay and pray” tactics, Koscheck was not a well-rounded fighter. But, what a difference a few fights make! Ever since his dominant victory over highly regarded Diego Sanchez, Kos has displayed his emerging array of skills.

The rigorous training dramatically improved Koscheck’s skills. No longer does he rely primarily on his wrestling. He can stand and trade if he feels comfortable. His striking was clearly better against Diego Sanchez and Dustin Hazlett. It even seemed better in his loss to GSP. If Kos chooses not to strike, he can utilize his decorated collegiate wrestling pedigree to take the fight to the ground. Once there, he has developed an adept submission base, so opponents must be wary of more than just his ground n’ pound.

Kos’s fight against Chris Lytle will be an important one. A win would once again put him amongst the top title contenders (w/ a victory his UFC record would improve to 9-2). Lytle is a seasoned veteran who has fought many of MMA’s best. However, he has never reached the upper echelon of elite fighters, but always proves to be a difficult challenge. His strength is his striking, where he accumulated a 13-1-1 record as a professional boxer. While Kos’ striking has looked crisp in his last several fights, it will be critical for him not to become over confident. Lytle has knockout power, which he displayed in brutal fashion, during his most recent, 33-second KO over Kyle Bradley at UFC 81

It will be necessary for Kos to stay disciplined. No matter how much he has fallen in love with his striking, Kos should not oblige Lytle and avoid turning the bout into a war. He doesn’t want Lytle to get inside, where he can land his short, powerful punches. Strategy wise, Kos must establish his jab early on, so he can keep Lytle at a distance. Kos will patiently wait for his opportunity to shoot and then take the fight to the ground. With Kos on top, he should be able to control Lytle, just as Matt Hughes was able to do.

Lytle should be used as a stepping-stone for Koscheck. In terms of pure athleticism, Kos has very few rivals in all of the sport. He owns all the tools to become a great fighter. He needs this win in order to test his newly developed skills against the world’s best.

Prediction: Josh Koscheck via decision

Joe Stevenson vs. Gleison Tibau

Gleison Tibau is a beast of a 155-pounder. In fact, he is a beast of a man in general. From a style standpoint, the fight should be intriguing. Both Stevenson and Tibau have solid wrestling skills, good jiu-jitsu moves and terrific strength. They are compact fighters. Victory will come down to whether or not Big Daddy Stevenson can dictate where the fight goes. If he is able to fight wherever he ends up feeling comfortable, then he should be able to eek out the win. But, if Tibau proves to be a more complete wrestler and puts Stevenson on his back, he will no doubt secure a submission or land some solid ground n’ pound.

Stevenson will be looking to bounce back from his tough loss to BJ Penn. If he wants to remain relevant in the division, he’ll need to prove that he has continued to improve and that his learning curve hasn’t reached a plateau. Stevenson does a lot of things well, but doesn’t have one outstanding skill. Tibau is a similar fighter, having the capabilities to strike, but the skills to excel on the ground. Yet, he hasn’t shown the explosiveness of a great fighter. In his last fight, he was overwhelmed in all facets by Tyson Griffin.

In order to start climbing the title ladder once more, it is essential for Stevenson to win this fight. Fans will observe two evenly matched fighters and find out which one is better.

Prediction: Joe Stevenson via Decision
